2023 International Masters Scholarship awarded to Sally Humphries and Leo Smits.

The Sally Humphries and Leo Smits International Scholarship was established to help international students pay for international student tuition at the University of Guelph. The greatest commitment to assisting disadvantaged populations through past activities and community engagement, as well as future commitment as indicated by the summary of the statement of academic intent, determines selection.

Guelph University is a comprehensive public research university located in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. It was founded in 1964 as a result of the merger of the Ontario Agricultural College (1874), the MacDonald Institute (1903), and the Ontario Veterinary College (1922), and has since grown to an institution with nearly 30,000 students (including those at the Humber campus, Ridgetown campus, off-campus degree enrolments, diploma enrolments, and part-time students) and 830 full-time faculty (academic staff) as of fall 2019. It provides 94 undergraduate degrees, 48 graduate programs, and 6 associate degrees in a variety of fields.

The Biodiversity Institute of Ontario is the world’s first high-volume DNA barcoding facility, allowing for the rapid identification of millions of species. Faculty are expected to enter over 500,000 barcode analyses per year. Between 2009 and 2011, the university’s School of Engineering underwent a $50 million expansion in the form of new construction and renovations. This is in response to the establishment of new mechanical, biomedical, and computer engineering programs, increased enrollment in undergraduate and graduate programs, and increased research in sustainability-related fields. Alexander Hall is a teaching and research facility for the environment. The Animal Cancer Centre is Canada’s first comparative cancer research institute. It includes a linear accelerator that provides animal radiation treatment.
