Rev. Ukpong is installed as the new Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Umuahia by Pope Francis
Most Rev. Michael Kalu Ukpong has been installed as the new Catholic Bishop of Abia State's Umuahia Diocese.
His installation came after the elevation of the previous, His Lordship, Most Reverend Licus Ugorji, to the Metropolitan Archbishop of Owerri, Imo State, to also replace Archbishop Anthony Obinna, who retired after reaching the obligatory retirement age of 75 years.
Ukpong, the third bishop of Umuahia, was consecrated and installed on February 2, 2023, in an event headed by Pope Francis' emissary, His Grace Anthonio Guido Filipazzi, Papal Nuncio to Nigeria.
Bishop Kalu Ukpong comes from the Amaekpu community in Abia State's Ohafia Local Government Area and was ordained as an Auxiliary Bishop on July 30, 2020.
He was appointed as the Diocesan Administrator on June 24, 2022, and later, on November 1st, 2022, he was named as the Diocesan Bishop by Pope Francis to succeed His Grace Most Rev. Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, who is currently on transfer to Owerri Catholic Diocese.
Rev. Ukpong noted that he has come as a servant of the gospel together with the Catholic faithful in Umuahia and the wider diocese in diverse roles to work together on what is needed for the diocese's growth as he was installed as the next Bishop of Umuahia Catholic Diocese.
He told Abia's Catholic population that he would be directed by the spirit of God, despite being aware of his predecessors' numerous accomplishments and strides.
The top Nigerian priest underlined that all of his acts and efforts would be guided by the international church's doctrine and practices.
As he took his new role, Ukpong praised Pope Francis and his predecessors for the unity in the Catholic community in Abia State and pledged to maintain the existing unity in the state's churches.
Earlier in his message, Pope Francis, the spiritual head of the Roman Catholic Church worldwide, tasked the new bishop with following in the footsteps of his predecessors as the third Bishop of the Diocese, admonishing him not to cut corners or take sides in his service and to allow brotherly love to continue among his priests.
