Lionel Messi admitted he was terrified after Argentina’s disastrous start to the 2022 World Cup, losing their first group game to lowly-ranked Saudi Arabia.
Argentina advanced to the competition’s final, where they defeated France on penalties and were crowned world champions.
Few, however, would have predicted Lionel Messi and co. to win the World Cup after their disastrous start.
But the South Americans recovered and went on to win the next six matches, and the former Barcelona man opened up about the shocking game in an interview with Argentine outlet Diario Ole.
After the setback, the PSG star admitted he was concerned about Argentina’s chances of progressing to the next stage of the competition, but that all changed after Mexico’s victory.
“Obviously, I was scared because the game did not go as planned,” Messi explained.
“However, everything was strengthened after the game we won against Mexico. It was one of our worst games against Arabia.”
