President Muhammadu Buhari’s broadcast about the naira problem on Thursday, according to Senior Advocate of Nigeria Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, is a contempt of court.
Buhari’s actions, he said, amounted to executive rascality and flagrant disrespect for the rule of law.
Adegboruwa revealed to NAIJALOADED on Thursday that the President could not overrule the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
He suggested that Buhari revoke his instruction and include old N500 and N1000 notes.
In a broadcast on Thursday, Buhari asked the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, to allow just the old N200 notes to circulate alongside the new N200, N500, and N1000 notes.
But in a swift reaction to Buhari’s directive, Adegboruwa said,
There is the separation of powers in a democracy.
“It amounts to executive rascality, brazen disregard, and contempt of the Supreme Court for the President to separate the denomination of the old notes for legality.
“It is not open to the President to choose which portion of the order of the Supreme Court will be obeyed.”
